Yahoo Classifieds

Posted by on Tuesday, 8 March, 2011

Yahoo Classifieds ranks as one of the most popular sites in the online classifieds industry. It boasts of advanced features such as accurate search function which are not available in competing sites. Businesses get the chance to promote their brand to thousands of visitors on Yahoo Classifieds. Meanwhile, consumers can get countless deals on travel tickets, movies, retail stores, and beauty outlets.

If you intend to place an ad on Yahoo Classifieds, make sure to choose the right category to get suitable replies. After all, there are thousands of ads, ranging from job vacancies to puppies for sale, are posted from all over the world. In terms of trustworthiness, there is no doubt that the site is legitimate. However, dealing with the individual who posted the ad or who replied to the ad is another matter. You should use your discretion to determine whether to proceed with a transaction or not.

To give you a better idea about how Yahoo Classifieds works, the sections are actually sub-categorized into the following
Arts & Humanities
-    Photography
-    History
-    Literature
Business & Economy
-    B2B
-    Finance
-    Jobs
Computers & Internet
-    Hardware
-    Software
-    Games
Entertainment
-    TV Shows
-    Movies
-    Music
-    Etc.

Basically, Yahoo Classifieds works more like a directory of websites (which will be found under the relevant sections, as above) rather than for specific postings of ads such as in the case of Craigslist. In this regard, the site has a unique niche in the large and competitive online classifieds industry. The fact that Yahoo! Is a reputable name also lends the directory an air of authority and credibility.

Yahoo Classifieds is mostly used by serious companies, internet marketers, and website owners to strengthen their online presence. This is as opposed to other classified advertising sites wherein individuals rather than businesses, aim to find others who are buying or selling anything and everything under the sun.

It is also important to take note that the service does not come for free. Getting listed comes with a host of advantages but it will cost a nonrefundable initial fee of $299. The company will also ask for an annually recurring fee of $299 to maintain your listing on the site. Another thing to consider is that the fee stated here is just the submission cost. Paying the money doesn’t necessarily mean that your website will actually be included in the Yahoo! Directory. The judgment on suitability, placement, and description for your site will be decided by the Directory Team.

Overall, submitting your site to Yahoo! Classifieds is worth considering. But as was discussed above, it can cost a significant amount of money with no guaranteed results. If you are confident that your site will be accepted and you have the budget, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t try it out. A lot of companies submit to the site because the advantages offered outweigh the cost. It is up to you to decide whether to go for it or not.

Recycler

Posted by on Friday, 25 February, 2011

Recycler.com is a unique classified ad website when compared to many of the other options available online.  It offers a variety of options and features that most other sites simply cannot offer.  At the same time, there are also some potential drawbacks that need to be considered as well.  In order to give you a better idea about whether or not this site could meet your needs, let’s take a quick of Recycler and what it has to offer.

How is Recycler Different?

When you think about classified ad sites, popular options like Craigslist tend to lead the way.  Unlike Craigslist, Recycler has a more nationwide approach.  While you can still search by location, it is categories based on topic rather than by location.  This means that if you place an ad, you will be automatically put in front of a nationwide audience.  Keep in mind that many people will still search by location, so you still have the ability to target specific areas.

Another interesting characteristic of Recycler is that it was not designed as a stand-alone product.  It is actually a central hub for a growing number of additional classified ad websites.  This means that when you post an ad, there is a good chance that it will be circulated elsewhere as well.  Some of the better known associations are with Oodle.com, Penny Saver, Military.com, and Walmart.  The owners of Recycler (Target Media Partners) have been around for more than 40 years and have a growing number of print publications as well.

Benefits of Recycler

1.    Options
When it comes to options, Recycler is definitely at the top.  They offer both free and paid classified ad postings as well as the option to post the same ad both online and in print.  They even utilize a state of the art geo-targeting feature that will ensure you can reach any audience that you want.  They also provide a number of different creation tools to ensure that your ad gets the best results possible.

2.    Print
One of the biggest advantages of using Recycler is that additional access to print publications both locally and nationwide.  Along with your online ad, you can also place an unlimited number of ads in any of their 70+ print classified ad magazines.  The best part is that the print magazines are currently posting a 95% pick up rate.

Drawbacks of Recycler

If there are any drawbacks to using Recycler is that the website itself  is not regionally focused  In fact, compared to most classified ad sites, the cities that are targeted regionally are minimal.  Another potential drawback is that because they run both online and print classified ad sites, the restrictions on what your ad is about is more limited.  In most cases this isn’t an issue, however they do not allow you to advertise MLM opportunities which are easily found on other classified ad sites.

During the review of Recycler one thing was very clear.  It is unlike any other online classified ad site.  It provides you with an opportunity to attract a nationwide audience as well as get your ad placed in print classified ad magazines as well.  While there are some potential drawbacks, they are minimal in comparison.

Craigslist

Posted by on Friday, 25 February, 2011

If you have even thought about using an online classified site then you have at least heard about Craigslist.  It follows a similar format as other online classified sites, however continues to be the most popular.  It was started in 1995 and has been steadily growing since then.  Craigslist offers a number of benefits to people who are looking for anything from a used desk to employment and everything else in between.  In this review of Craigslist we will take a look at what it offers as well as some potential benefits and drawbacks to using it.

Review of Craigslist

Craigslist offers all of the areas that you expect to find when scanning through the classified section of your local newspaper as well as some extras.  It is free to view listings and in most cases free to post ads as well.  Although there can be some fees based upon the city and section that you are posting in.  Some of the most popular sections include: personals, housing, for sale, services, jobs, and much more.  There are also local discussion forums as well ranging from health and to beauty to science.

Benefits of Craigslist

1.    Audience
One of the biggest benefits to using Craigslist is the huge audience that it has.  On a daily basis, Craigslist can consistently get more viewers than any other online classified site.  As someone who wants to post ads, this gives you the ability to be seen by thousands of people every day.  As someone who is searching for something, Craigslist attracts an extremely large number of ads, so you have a very good chance of finding whatever you are looking for.

2.    Specificity
Another benefit of using Craigslist is that all of the sections are broken down into easy to use sub-sections.  If you are posting a job opening in your local newspaper, then your ad will be in the middle of the employment section but with Craigslist, you can specify the industry which gives you more targeted viewers.  As someone who is searching for something, this specificity makes you job easier as well.  As an added bonus, the website is very easy to navigate from one city to another.

Drawbacks of Craigslist

1.    Competition
While having access to a huge audience is a great benefit, the high level of competition can be a drawback.  Your posting is listed in the order that it was submitted.  If you submit your ad and 20 people submit an ad a few minutes after yours, then your listing will be more than half way down the page and will likely get a few less views.

2.    Smaller Areas
While Craigslist is undeniably the most popular online classified website for the United States, a lot of rural areas do not use it.  While this may not matter to most people, it is something to keep in mind.

It is important to keep in mind that along with a review of Craigslist, these same drawbacks can be applied to a majority of online classified sites and are not necessarily unique to Craigslist alone.  Overall, Craigslist is going to be one of the best places to post your online ad.

Backpage

Posted by on Sunday, 20 February, 2011

If you have thought about using free classified ad sites, then there is a good chance that you have heard about Backpage.  While it is not quite as popular as Craigslist, it is still consistently garnering more than 2-3 million views per month.  If you haven’t worked with Backpage before, then you might not know how it stacks up against other similar classified ad sites.  Here is a closer look at how Backpage works and whether or not it would be a good investment of your time.

How Backpage Works

The general process is similar to any other classified ad website.  You start out by choosing your location and then clicking on the “post ad” button.  You will then be taken to an area where you can actually create your ad.  This includes adding text (limit 500 words), images, and HTML.  If you don’t want to add any extra features, then you simply click on the submit button.  If you already have an account, then it can get posted automatically.  If not, then you will have to set up an account.  It is important to note that while a majority of ads will be free, there are certain cities and certain sections that may require a small fee (normally only a few dollars).

Additional Posting Options

Backpage does offer a few “recommended upgrades” that you can purchase in order to make your ad more effective.

•    Auto Repost
You can choose to have your ad automatically reposted, which is great if you plan on submitting the same ad multiple times anyways.  You start by choosing how often you want your ad reposted.  It can range from 3 days to 30 days.  Next, you decide how many times you would like it reposted, between 4 and 26 times.

•    Sponsor Ad
For $.05 per week, your post can appear highlighted with thumbnails on the right hand side of the category that you are entering the ad into.

Potential Benefits of Using Backpage

•    HTML
One of the biggest benefits of posting your classified ads on Backpage is that you can include HTML links.  This means that you can link directly to offers or your website.  Very few other classified ad sites make this available.  Along with the benefits of directing to your website, it can help you improve your backlink portfolio as well.

•    No Phone Verification
Craigslist has lost a lot of support from internet marketers because it require phone verification of every account.  Backpage does not require anything more than email verification.

Drawbacks

The only drawback that has been noted in customer reviews is that customer support is sometimes lacking.  This is particularly true if someone has purchase the premium upgrades and then had their ad suspended or banned.

Overall, it seems like Backpage has become one of the most popular classified ad sites online.  If you are planning on posting ads, then the benefits of adding HTML elements to the page and lack of phone verification can be a huge benefit.
